So on May 7th, we packed up our home in Zeeland and moved into an apartment in Mount Pleasant. We loved our time in Zeeland and are looking forward to making memories in MP too.
There are a lot of things that are different here- so it has been an adjustment- we were very spoiled in our duplex. We never heard our neighbors and had a garage and a driveway and it was just wonderful. Now we are on the first floor of an apartment, which is next to the laundry room. The basketball court is right outside. Sometimes its very exciting (when our neighbors have an argument that spreads into the hallway, we can hear every word!) and sometimes its annoying (our upstairs neighbor was up til 2:30 last night, walking around with at least 12 friends. I could not sleep!) I am still getting used to the extra sounds in our apartment that do not mean I need to pay attention to them. The guy upstairs gets home and I hear him walk in and say "Micah?" I am glad he cannot hear me up there- I would be embarrassed for all the times I mistake him to be in our apartment.
We also live next to the laundry room- which is great because it makes laundry super easy. But saturday mornings are a little loud- hearing the door of the laundry room open and close so many times. Also the basketball court is in our backyard and its nice to watch the kids (young and old) play. The bouncing basketballs don't annoy me as much as I thought they would.
Mount Pleasant has been an adjustment too- it took me three trips to Meijer to find the frozen gluten free food section. Their Meijer is across town, and I always get a good parking spot. thats a plus. The groceries are on the right side of the store though. Its very backwards. We went to the kroger and walmart, but we are Meijer people (although the Kroger had a few GF options that the meijer did not have). I am still trying to find the nearest Health Foods Store for some GF specialty things, I know there is one in Edmore (about 30 minutes south of here). So If I am desperate, I can stop there.
Last sunday we got to attend a sunday morning worship service at our new church in Six Lakes. New Life United Methodist Church was a lot of fun. We felt so welcomed! I really felt well received by the community of New Life UMC. Beginning in June I will be their Director of Worship and Education. Its a big job- and we are still sorting out what I will be doing, but the Pastor has made it very clear to everyone that I am there to help them do ministry first- not take over the programs and do it myself. I am excited to use my gifts, talents and experience with this congregation. Til June, I drive back to Zeeland once a week to work at the church and help them with the adjustment- and I stay with my parents overnight to make the trip a little easier. Its a long two hour drive from our home in MP to my parents home in Holland.
Micah has been enjoying his time at Grad School. He hasn't even been a student for a week yet and is already spending more time in the lab than at home. They have a test on tuesday on Anatamy- which Micah told me basically covers his entire undergraduate courses. His advisor also recommended to her students that they take this test very seriously. If they do not do well, the entire 3 years of grad school will be difficult. Micah is taking it very seriously. I spend a lot of time enjoying our apartment and netflix by myself. (speaking of which- anyone got any good Netflix suggestions?) Micah has been meeting people and is so excited about it. Its really a great fit for him, and we are so glad that he is going there. Soon I will get to meet some of the students too- and I am excited to start getting to know some people here.
Keep us in your prayers as we continue to adjust. Since we have gotten here I have had some odd reactions because of my celiacs disease (I got an itchy rash on my arms and legs) and I am on the upswing from a fight with the stomach flu too. It has made for a rocky start up here for me. But through all this, God is faithful and I know that he has called us here for a reason. We will continue to follow his plan for us. -- Meredith (and Micah)
