Preparing to say Goodbye to Grandma VanderHill

Micah and I have been back in Holland this week. We got a phone call Monday night that told us that Grandma was having a lot of pain, and that she would likely die soon.  Tuesday she was getting weaker, but still talking to the family. When Micah and I got there on Wednesday afternoon, she had already slipped into a coma.  The family has been gathered around Grandma all week, talking with her, singing with her, praying with her.  We are all surprised that she is still resting in her coma yet today-- we thought she would have passed by now.  We know that she is ready to go and be with Jesus, and we pray that God takes her soon, and gives her eternal relief from her pain.

It has been a blessing of a week-- and has really been a week of mourning, of prayer, and of togetherness.  We have been able to sit with Micah's family and face the hard truth of death, and talk about how we have nothing to fear, and share all the wonderful stories of Grandma with each other.  We have been able to be with Grandma and as we slowly watch her slip away, see how her faith and the faith of her family makes this time of vigil a time of transition.  As Grandma transitions to her heavenly home, our family is transitioning to a life without Grandma.

A month ago, each member of the family wrote on a fabric square a message to Grandma- which was turned into a quilt.  She has been using it as a blanket for the past month and this past week.

While we wait for Grandma to pass, we have been spending time with each other all over the woods.  Today, we went over to push over this big stump that has been rotting.  It was a difficult feat, but with the help of 6 adult men, they were finally able to push it over. (After almost an hour of pushing, it was quite the victory!)

Please keep the VanderHill family in your prayers as we continue this journey of saying goodbye to Grandma together. Please pray that the Lord takes her home soon, so that she is no longer in pain here, but is fully restored in heaven.  And pray that the family feels God's comforting arms wrapping around them, in this difficult time.

Love, Meredith and Micah
